Living, Laughing & Experiencing Life in Canada's Capital Region

The kids and I were on an adventure last summer. We were headed to Manitoulin Island to see my friend Christine.  After a long drive from Clifford we finally pulled into the holding area for the cars waiting to get on the Ferry.

The kids immediately jumped out of the car and ran towards the wharf to feed the ducks and watch the boats. Just as I closed my car door, the car behind me bumped into the back of my car. Thankfully, that car was going 10 km s or less, when it hit my car. I was even more thankful, that my children were not standing behind my car as the driver of the car, who was checking his text messages, would not have seen my children standing behind my vehicle. We checked out the minimal damage, just a scratch really and everyone seemed fine as we walked over to the grocery store to pick up snacks for the boat.

Later on as we enjoyed the quiet sailing across Georgian Bay, we entered the on board gift shop. KT, who had earned money helping me clean out the pool, bought some trinkets for herself as the other two picked out their favourite items.

Later on that evening as we settled in for the night, after the two littlest Guthrie’s had fallen asleep, KT said she had questions.

“Mommy you know today, when that car bumped our car?”

Yes, honey…but no one was hurt, everyone is OK.

“I know Mommy, but I wanted to give you this because you drive all the time and I always want you to come home.”

Don’t worry KT, I’ll always come home.

“Mommy, you don’t text and drive ….right?”

No honey, no I don’t.

Even though it was a very small bump, it had effected my oldest as she knew what could have happened. I promised myself that I would keep my phone in the middle council of the car when I was driving because it is too much of a distraction for me. I made a promise to my daughter I would come home each night and I intend to keep it.

The folks at CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) and other traffic safety partners have come together to launch a six week long education and awareness campaign (July 29 – Sept 12 ). They are urging all drivers to make a promise. It’s simple, go online to caasco.com/focus and promise to your family and friends to focus on the road.

#CAA

A couple of simple facts made my Promise to Focus on the Road an easy one to make:

1. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of collisions and easily one of the most avoidable.

2. Distractions can come from almost anything that makes you look away from the road. A split second is all it takes to dramatically change the rest of your life.

3. Driving requires your full attention. Losing your focus on the road can lead to weaving in an out of your lane, missing a traffic sign and putting yourself, passengers and others at risk.

Are you ready to make the promise to end distracted driving?

I might have an issue with my kitchen. As strange as it sounds I love waking up each morning to an empty sink as well as clean & dish free counters. It starts my morning off on a good foot and makes me feel a little less frantic.

However, cleaning my kitchen is the last thing I want to do each night just before bed. Scotch-Brite contacted me about their new line of kitchen cleaning products designed to help make clean up less of chore.

Scotch-Brite has two new Ultra Scrub Sponges to rid the mess in my kitchen. The new Ultra Appliance Scrub Sponge targets my microwave and toaster oven messes. One side scours away the mess and the other side wipes the appliance clean. I throw the sponge in my dishwasher after each use to rinse the bacteria away and reuse over and over again.

I also used the Ultra Stainless Steel Sink Rejuvenator which shines worn out sinks, which leaves my kitchen sink spick and span, at least until the next meal. I have also found this sponge particularly useful at the cottage with burnt on grime from the campfire cooking. It brings my pots back to the original shine with little effort.

The entire line up of Scotch-Brite Stay Clean was impressive. However, even more impressive was how my AndiePandie got involved in the cleaning process. She is an experimenter at heart, just like her Dad the chemical engineer. AndiePandie wanted to see if Scotch-Brite Dishwand actually worked. While she was testing, all the leftover dishes from our spaghetti supper ended up sparkly clean. A complete win-win situation if you ask me!

My daughters, niece and I had an inspiring time at the launch party for Entrepreneur Barbie in downtown Toronto. At the event we had the opportunity to view some Barbie’s past careers choices, play with the latest Barbie’s & accessories, chat with Erica Diamond, Canada’s Chief Inspiration Officer and meet Alicia Moffat, the 2014 winner of The Next Star.

All the fabulous girls #entrepreneurbarbie @barbie

I found the story of Ruth Handler to be inspiring, she truly was an entrepreneur. My niece Madison, is also a young entrepreneur and was amazed at the adventures Barbie has had during her various career paths.

“It is hard to believe that Barbie has had 150 careers. Barbie has always encouraged girls that if you can dream it, you can be it. With the launch of the Entrepreneur Barbie doll, she is blazing trails along with other female leaders who are proud to be the boss. This year alone female entrepreneurs have graced the cover of Time’s Most Influential people issues.”

The very talented Alicia Moffat, who is the 2014 winner of The Next Star sang two songs including her recently recorded and her first released single, “Why Do Boys Lie”.

The guests at the launch of the entrepreneur Barbie were also introduced to the Barbie Bursary:

The Barbie Business Bursary encourages Canadians to nominate a budding entrepreneur, under the age of 18, who demonstrated true entrepreneurial spirit, from now until September 1, 2014. To enter the national competition visit the Barbie My Dreams site and share your nominee’s entrepreneurial dream.

Barbie will select ten amazing nominees and post their video profiles on Barbie My Dreams; a jury panel will then select three winners to receive a $2500 Barbie Business Bursary to fund their big ideas.

We were also able to listen to the stories of the amazing & successful women in the room and their connection to the iconic Barbie doll. Including the fabulous & inspirational Erica Diamond creator and owner of Women on the Fence. I was also able to connect, once again, with Eric Ehm, the creator and publisher at Yummy Mummy Club who has inspired me personally with her tenacity and business savvy.

I have an Entrepreneur Barbie to give one of my lucky readers. Leave me a comment & tell me what you think Barbie’s next career should be. You can enter daily. The winner will be emailed on August 6th, 2014.
