Growing up, the Toronto Maple Leafs were my Dad’s favourite hockey team. That of course meant they were my favourite team (until I moved to Ottawa and came to my senses became a Senators fan).  My first Leaf game, was an amazing experience in the old Maple Leaf Gardens. The entire place smelled like a combination of our hometown arena and warm salted popcorn. I remember thinking how close to players we were and how fast the skaters flew past my seat on the glass.

Darcy Tucker Tweet Chat

Recently, I had the opportunity to be part of a tweet chat with Darcy Tucker, a long time Maple Leaf player. From mentoring rookie players to coaching, Darcy gives back to his community and wanted to tweet about the good work that he and @Scotiahockey are doing across Canada for our young hockey players.

Darcy spent an hour on twitter, using the #Scotiahockey hashtag answering all the questions his fans could tweet him in 60 minutes. He answered several of my questions:

…and I might have taken a little bit of flack for my choice of hockey teams:

But in the end Darcy made my Dad’s night, I could not have asked for more:

Dad

Scotiabank is proud to support of community hockey across Canada. They know that being part of a hockey team teaches valuable lessons about camaraderie and contributes to the richness of the lives of children & strengthens communities.

Did you know that more than 1,000 branches financially support local hockey teams? Throughout the year Soctiabank also recognizes teams across the country with unique hockey experiences like visits from NHL Alumni or the Stanley Cup!

You can find more about the work #Scotiahockey does in your community & communities across Canada on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Thank you Darcy & #Scotiahockey for being so accessible and making my Dad’s night!

Spring is finally here and the entire Guthrie family is finally spending more time outside in the sunshine. We enjoy spending time together as a family, walking our dogs Snickers & Easton during the warm spring days. When the children were little one of the biggest challenges we found, while walking our dogs, was maneuvering the dog leashes around the pram or stroller wheels.

When we has our oldest daughter we had no clue what we needed, so we bought a hugely over priced & oversized pram. It was almost impossible to go for a walk without stopping to untangle the dog’s leashes from the pram wheels. When our second daughter came along,  we gave up on strollers all together and used baby carriers. Our problem then became making sure the baby did not fall into the dog poop as we scooped our pups poop.

Can we go for a walk now?

Recently, as I was searching for a baby shower gift for a colleague, I came across a review opportunity for the SmarTrike® 4-in-1 Touch Steering Chic Tricycle. I was able to test this product and was immediately impressed by how easy it was to steer, the ability to switch between parent controlled with only the push of a button and the longevity of the product. I wish I had found this product just a few years earlier, I know this trike would have made a huge difference in our family dog walking experiences.

Great News! I am giving you, my readers, a chance to win the SmarTrike Chic in your choice of either  Pink or Black.

As parent, educator and community coach, being aware of the mental health of my children, my students and the athletes I coach,  is a key component in assisting them to be successful. In all three scenarios I try to lead by example with positive reinforcement and listen more then I speak.

I have been proud client of RBC since the 1980’s, I opened my first account in our petite local branch on the main street in my hometown. When I found out about the RBC Run for Kids, I knew I had to be involved.

RBC_Runforthekids-1

A little about where the financial support of the race will go:

As many as two million young people in Canada are struggling with mental health issues such as an anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, depression or addiction, and yet only one in five will get specialized treatment. This is largely because families don’t know where to turn to find the services their children need.

“The Family Navigation Project helps families who have a young person suffering from a mental health issue or addiction,” says Dr. Anthony Levitt, medical director of the Family Navigation Project. “We find the help and find it now.”

There are plenty of mental health services available for young people, he says, but the system is confusing. It can be extremely difficult for families to find their way to the right program, especially during a crisis. Sunnybrook’s Family Navigation Project partners families with professional navigators. These navigators are knowledgeable about what services exist, and become allies in guiding families toward the right care at the right time.

Thanks to generous support from the RBC Run for the Kids™, the Family Navigation Project has launched ahead of schedule and is already servicing vulnerable youth in the GTA.

Novice-1

There are 3 different race lengths for racers to enjoy; 5km, 15km, 25 km. Which one is right for you?

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned runner, this is the event for you. You choose the distance that works for you and we’ll help you every step of the way. Tips from Sunnybrook experts will help you train and get you to the finish line. Best of all, you’ll be helping youth with mental health issues to find the specialized care they need.

Last year, in its very first year, RBC Run for the Kids™ attracted 4,500 participants and raised an astounding $1.2 million for youth mental health. With your support, this year we can go even further to help young people get back on track to a brighter future.

All routes start and finish at Mel Lastman Square.

There are several training blogs that showcase individuals at different stages of training, on the RBC site as well as training tips, how to train schedules and training clinics.

The race is September 20th, 2014. Will be you be there? For more information on volunteering, participating and donating to this amazing race please check out the RBC Run for Kids site. Did I mention there are prizes from the fabulous sponsors? You never know I might see you at the finish line.

This weekend I am attending the B Connected Conference in Ottawa. I am working with Active for Life to bring awareness to their site and social media channels.

” Experts agree that physical literacy is just as important as reading, writing, and arithmetic.”

This simple statement made me want to work with the Active for life team. Really, that is it. They capture my values as a parent, educator and community coach.

As well, I hope to help parents, community members and coaches develop an understanding of physical literacy.

AfL_Logo

“Physical literacy comes from developing a wide variety of fundamental movement skills such as hopping, skipping, throwing, catching and jumping. Kids have a lot more fun being active when they are physically literate. Physically active kids get higher grades in school, have better social skills and are happier and more confident.”

Is there really anything else we want for our kids then for them to be happy?

This weekend, I will be asking questions, tweeting pictures and generally engaging my community to connect with the #AfLKids community.

RT my tweets or ask me questions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest using the #AfLKids hashtag this weekend, and each impression will enter you into a draw to win an Active for Life Spring Kit. My friends at Active for Life headquarters will pick a winner Sunday night.

Good Luck to all my readers and active families across Canada. If you are at the B Connected Conference come over and ask me Physical Literacy.

Save the date! We will also be hosting a Facebook party on April 26th, 2014 at 8:00 pm. There will be interesting questions, fun ideas to keep your kids active and of course prizes. There will be more information to come!
